Marina Garofano, MSW, LISW-CP
It can be challenging to know if your child would benefit from therapy or if another service may be more appropriate. My approach in working with your child & family is unique & individualized to fit you and your child's needs. I will assess early on (and along the way) if there is a true readiness for therapy, as well as assist you in a referral process if I think your child could benefit from an additional service, such as a formal evaluation, occupational therapy, etc.
Additionally, I incorporate parents in the therapy process through parent coaching sessions, parent check-ins at the beginning or end of sessions, and the option to include parents in sessions with their children in order to facilitate to conversation between family members.
Although my style is highly collaborative and supportive, you can expect that I will be direct and educational when addressing issues and professional recommendations. I utilize a variety of modalities in working with children and families, such as play therapy, expressive art therapy, and more traditional talk therapy to name a few.
It is important to me that we take it slow and allow for a therapeutic relationship with a foundation of trust to build in the beginning stages - sessions will be client-led with guidance and encouragement from me along the way.
In addition to working with children & families, I work with individuals of all ages, including but not limited to adults struggling with a history of trauma, divorce/co-parenting, family dynamics, anxiety, & depression. You can expect that I will offer a balance of supporting and challenging you on your journey to increasing self-awareness, developing insight, and healing.
I earned my MSW at Boston University School of Social Work. My prior degrees include a Bachelors in Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies from the College of Charleston.
